The Columbian Exchange Food Blog - Greek Salad

Claire Akins

Today I visited a Greek restaurant and had the oppurtunity to try Greek salad. Many of the ingredients in Greek salad were traded in the Columbian Exchange.

One of the main ingredients in Greek salad is tomatoes. In the Columbian Exchange, tomatoes were exchanged from the New World to the Old world. This had an enormous impact on Europe because today, tomatoes are used in a variety of dishes in many European countries. Peppers are also an important ingredient that were traded in the Columbian Exchange. Peppers originated in the Americas and were exchanged in the Columbian Exchange with The Old World. Feta cheese and olives are also part of this salad. Cattle were exchanged from the Old World to the New World and were useful forproducing milk to make cheese. Olives were also exchanged and given to the New World.

Greek salad is a great way to experience the culture and products involved in the Columbian Exchange. The salad that I ate at the restaurant tasted horrendous and I'm pretty sure the cheese was about three weeks past its experation date, but I least I experienced some of the products of the Columbian Exchange.. even if they tasted god awful.
